The last ten days of the year saw eighteen youngsters sailing from Mumbai to Mandwa for a sail camp supported by the BSA – Bombay Sailing association and the RBYC – Royal Bombay yacht Club youngsters, during the last few days of the year. The children sailed from Mumbai to Mandwa.
To train the children a world class coach was appointed. The children were accompanied by their parents and resided at the BSA club house in Mandwa.It is not hard to learn sailing.. Sailing demands self-control and vigilance, qualities that after school activities can actually educate children today. When sailing, a child learns to appreciate and respect the forces of nature and see how the earth really works, and understand how we, as humans, must protect it.
They learn to rely on and nurture their common logic, and straight away draw upon accomplishments that they learned along the way: how to calculate distance, how to interpret the weather conditions, how a sailboat works, how to spot landmarks and sea life. The best part regarding this learning process is that it is so natural, a child hardly realizes he or she is learning; & thought as far as children are concerned they are just spending the day sailing inside the bay.
Sailing is without doubt gaining acceptance amongst Mumbai’s children. The kids were utterly overjoyed to give up their usual holiday & get into their little boats and yachts instead! Sailing exercises and maneuvers kept the children busy for the next few days. This was a appreciated change of pace for these children.
This was a delightful change of pace for these children. With no network in Mandwa, no TV and supplementary such distractions, the children had only the sea & the sands & of course their boats & each other to keep themselves amused and engaged. This boating Regatta was held on the 2nd Jan 2010. The children sailed back to Mumbai from Mandwa. Upamanyu Dutta won the race.
