It has been said that nothing beats a great day fishing, even if the fish don’t bite. But don’t we all want those fish on our lines just the same? If one could know it all about fishing tackle, that opportunity may swim into view.
Looking into fishing products can be an overwhelming experience, due to the vast amounts of products available. But keeping up with the marketers can be simplified if you keep it simple for yourself. A basic set up of reel, rod, and line will do most anyone just fine.
When dealing with line, think about strength and flexibility. Do you want to catch bass or barracuda? Sharks or salmon? Different fish have different aspects and lines should match those characteristics as best they can. Larger and stronger catches, obviously, need greater tensile strengths. The obverse is also true for smaller fry so choose accordingly.
Rods are definitely entering in to the complicated stages. Again, composition is key, and length, diameter, construction, guides, wrappings, coatings, types of water involved, casting or trolling, lightweight or heavy, and on and on it goes. Rods can use some careful consideration, and research here is of great importance.
From hand cranked baits to spinning lures to solid and staid tuna sticks, reels can be fit to any fishing occasion. Advanced technologies have put new reels in a class by themselves, and an amazing amount of time and stress saving options are available. This bit of gear may be the most important, as this is where the real work gets done. Know what you need, know what you can spend, and do your homework for the best equipment.
As for what to use for bait, live baits are a reliable standby. These can be found as close as the nearest backyard, where worms, night crawlers, and grubs can be dug up. Or, if you prefer specialty items, such as salamanders and newts, can be found in certain shops. While many dislike live bait due to squeamishness, they are simple and almost fool proof. A worm, a hook, and some time may be all one needs for the catch of the day.
Fake bait, or lures, can offer some very exciting takes on catching fish. Many lures are far more colorful and lively than the fish they are intended to catch. Every conceivable color of the rainbow is offered in plastics, and lures are designed to do almost anything except cast themselves in to the water. Fish seem to love the novelty of these shiny baubles, and some actually seem to prefer them to natural fare. You can never go wrong in trying something new, and lures provide the novelties.
Since this is all about fishing tackle items such as nets and traps are not discussed. But when considering tackle, remember that variety is the spice of a fishy life. What is working today may not be working tomorrow, and sometimes fish appetites can change from moment to moment. So do not be afraid to try the latest gadgets as well as the time tested standbys. Both the good old fashioned cane pole and worm and the technologically advanced tuna rig have their rightful place. The fish will always be biting somewhere, so try them all!
